Shelter for Your Pets – The P.A.W.S. Program

Safe House for Women, Inc. has developed a relationship with the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri to provide emergency foster homes for pets of women who are fleeing an abusive home but do not want to leave their pets behind to suffer abuse. This program assures that ALL members of the family are protected.
Research demonstrates that pets are not immune to violence and are often vehicles to perpetrate the violence and control in the home. Batterers abuse animals to control and coerce women---even going as far as torturing and killing the animal. Research also indicates that women will remain in an abusive relationship instead of leaving their pet behind in order to protect the pet.
The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri provides emergency shelter for the pet that is humane and loving at no charge to the victim.
